屠宰废水来自于圈栏冲洗、淋洗、屠宰及其它厂房地坪冲洗、烫毛、剖解、副食加工、动物残渣，血水等组成。留存在动物体内的粪便和屠宰过程中所产生的血水，所含氨氮的量是很高的，如未被处理掉就随渗入地下或者流入河流中，对人类耐以生存的水自然造破坏，从而引起蓝藻滋生，水中的鱼虾大面积死亡的现象发生。
生活污水是居民日常生活中排出的废水，主要来源于居住建筑和公共建筑，如住宅、机关、学校、医院、商店、公共场所及工业企业卫生间等。生活污水所含的污染物主要是有机物(如蛋白质、碳水化合物、脂肪、尿素、氨氮等) 和大量病原微生物(如寄生虫卵和肠道传染病毒等)。存在于生活污水中的有机物极不稳定，容易腐化而产生恶臭。
医疗污水主要是从医院的诊疗室、化验室、病房、洗衣房、X片照相室和手术室等排放的污水，其污水来源及成分十分复杂。医院污水中含有大量的病原细菌、病毒和化学药剂，具有空间污染、急性传染和潜伏性传染的特征。
